Joint Success of SASMob Project and Regular Events in Szeged by the Tisza River
transportation solutions in an online publication.
Vice Mayor Sándor Nagy spoke about Szeged and set the SASMob Project and the summer closures of the city’s river wharf road as good examples worth following.
Civitas online is the name of the publication in which 3 EU country capitals, 3 other EU cities and the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina introduce their community transport solutions.
Civitas is a network of European cities, with a long history of idea sharing by its participants about more sustainable and environmentally friendly (community) transport.
This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the organisation published an online video publication, in which Aachen, Bratislava, Helsinki, Madrid, Réthimno, Sarajevo and Szeged introduced themselves and their solutions.
We take special pride in the fact that the cover page of the publication is a scene from Szeged’s main square, with Tram 2 travelling to Európa Liget. The online publication is downloadable and interactive. The online material offers a separate section about each city, the given city introducing itself. Courage is the motto of the online magazine: the cities covered by it have dared to perform the developments and make the changes which used to seem impossible – but have by no proved viable and positive.
Szeged unveils two of its initiatives:
- the closure of its river wharf road and
- the SASMob Project
In the city video, Sándor Nagy, Vice Mayor for City Development, speaks about these initiatives in English. He highlights the huge changes that the city’s community transport has undergone over the past fifteen years, as well as states that the establishment of 30-km/h and other slow traffic zones and making the most possible public space available to cyclists were equally important.
The closing of the river wharf road at summer weekends and the programmes held there proved it possible to bring life and good vibes to places where the same had earlier seemed never or rarely possible.
– We dared to rid car drivers of parking places by closing a river wharf road. It was a good decision. Dare to do the same! – messaged Sándor Nagy to the other cities.
Meanwhile, the SASMob Project proves that companies taking responsibility for their city and their employees can do something together to make a city more liveable. And this liveability is also enhanced by carefully selecting the means of transport we use.
