The passenger counting sensor started live in Szeged!
Although the project officially ended on January 31, 2022, we will not stay without developments or transport solutions in the future. Nothing proves this better than the fact that in addition to the traffic counting sensors located at the Downtown Bridge and at the intersection of road Algyői and Street Diadal, the passenger counting sensor, installed on tram two, is also live.
The sensor-based passenger and traffic counting system is based on the technology patented by the Department of Software Development of the Faculty of Science and Informatics of the University of Szeged, while thanks to the Szeged Transport Company, the data transmitted by the sensors can be viewed on spectacular data visualizations. The sensors use artificial intelligence to detect departing passengers, thus determining the number of passengers. As the system only transmits “numbers”, the protection of personal data is maximized.
The on-board sensor on tram two counts the departing passengers and based on the data transmitted by it, the following data visualization shows the average number of passengers travelling between the two terminals (Európa liget - Szeged, railway station) in a given hour.
Based on the measured data, it can be stated that the number of passengers is the highest on weekdays between 07:00 and 08:00 towards to Szeged railway station and between 15:00 and 16:00 towards to the “Európa liget” station. On weekends the passenger traffic is more balanced. The data can be helpful in scheduling, but it can also be useful information for users of public transport and tram two.
Vehicle on-board sensor data is available here.
