Växjö is ready to face this year's slipperiness and snowfall smarter than before.
Plowing and anti-skid is not difficult, but it is difficult to plan and is costly. Therefore, Växjö municipality has entered into an innovation partnership with the company Klimator. The goal is to combine research and smart technology, as basis for a digitized decision making system for how Växjö's road and cycle paths are to be cleared of snow and combat slipperiness.
Just in time for the first frosty nights in Växjö, in southern Sweden, the municipality and Klimator are now ready with digitalized decision making system that this winter season will be tested in practice.
For 30 years, Klimator has researched and developed models that predict where and when it will be slippery on the road. Today, the company's data is used by both the automotive industry and winter contractors. By combining local conditions around topography where watercourses, mountains, shadows from trees with real-time data from the contractors' actions, weather stations, connected cars, and IoT sensors, Klimator creates a highly defined road forecasts.
The development work taking place in Växjö is the first time that Klimator's research is combined with smart technology for a road network on municipality level. Previously, it has mostly been used on state owned roads. The potential for work efficiency and cost savings for municipalities is large, resulting in more cities now start to follow the development work taking place in Växjö.
