Vilawatt strives to show Europe the value of home power renovations
The initiative is investing €1.4 million in insulation, installations and equipment, both private and building-wide.
The final of the four Vilawatt goals is coming closer. It is what is known as demo home renovation. This means it is a pilot programme to show the extent to which power renovations in old residential buildings can help reduce the need for energy and make consumption more efficient, while also seeking to make residents more comfortable.
The works, which began in December with preliminary tasks, will continue until spring. They are being carried out by the company REHAC S.A. in three residential buildings that applied to participate in a public call that had specific technical requirements. The three buildings were chosen according to an initial report where the partner Associació LIMA – Low Impact Mediterranean Architecture – led a team of experts carrying out a meticulous work of deep scanning the building stock in terms of energy needs and define different typologies. The total investment in the buildings will be €1.4 million.
Actions taken:
- Thermal insulation on the façades, building roofs, roof-top terraces and, in some cases, dividing façades or inside the ground floor.
- Replacing joinery and installing sunscreens.
- Updating lighting in common areas with motion-sensor LED lights.
- Installing LED light bulbs inside homes.
- Replacing boilers with more efficient models.
- Replacing refrigerators, the home appliance that uses the most power, with low-consumption models.
- Installing (in one building) a dual-flow ventilation system with heat recovery in retail spaces.
