City of Ghent wins the Belfius Smart Belgium Award 2018 with TMaaS
The Smart Belgium Awards 2018 offer rewards in eight domains that are dedicated to preparing our society for the future: Circular Economy, Smart City Services, Education, Energy, the Environment, Health and Prevention, Mobility and Urban Development. More than 150 organisations submitted their ‘smart’ projects at the end of last year. A professional jury chose 50 chose out of these and they were invited to present their projects to a jury.
The City of Ghent had already been presented with the Civitas Bold Measure Award with its TMaaS project in 2018.
“We hope that this award will inspire other cities to start using digital solutions to tackle mobility challenges in their cities. The objective of this project is to offer local residents in Ghent a first trial version by the spring of 2020, after which the traffic platform will be tested in three other cities.”
The TMaaS project
The aim of this TMaaS platform is to provide a forward-looking solution for urban traffic and the problems arising from this. The traffic platform provides governments and citizens with a wealth of traffic information in real time aimed at optimising urban mobility. It combines mobility information from data and transport companies and other players and communicates them automatically to end users. The cloud-based TMaaS solution is futuristic, efficient and inexpensive. Moreover, it can be used in any urban context.
This project is co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development via the Urban Innovative Actions (UIA) initiative.
TMaaS is a joint venture involving a number of project partners from different fields including the City of Ghent itself, Ghent University and KU Leuven, TomTom, the global player in the field of navigation and mapping; the Ghent software company Waylay - the creator of the cloud-based automation platforms and Be-Mobile, the market leader in smart mobility, also from Ghent. The European Passengers' Federation EPF (with headquarters in Ghent) is also involved and the communications are handled by the communications agency De Staatse Ruiter. An advisory board with international experts will evaluate the evolution of the project every six months until the end of January 2021.
We are delighted to have been awarded prestigious prize. With this now firmly under its belt, the TMaaS team is even more motivated to continue on its successful course.
