Cities engaging in the right to housing - Web conference #2 - No one left behind

Cities engaging in the right to housing - No one left behind Web conference
Today, more European cities and social movements are calling governments at all levels to take responsibility for reaffirming housing as a right and not as a commodity. They are also showing the way by trying out concrete actions to implement the right to housing. This web conference #2 was dedicated to housing exclusion, focussing on vulnerabilities related to homelessness and migration. At least 700 000 people are homeless any given night in the EU, 70% more than a decade ago. In addition, the current COVID-19 emergency shows how essential housing is, considering to that many people cannot access secure, safe home, or are at risk of housing difficulties loosing jobs and working opportunities.

The online event offered a sneak preview of 2020 Report on Housing Exclusion in Europe, co-written by FEANTSA and Fondation Abbé Pierre and featured city cases that directly tackle housing exclusion and discrimination, providing a practical response on the ground. It also looked at opportunities at EU level to invest in the provision of adequate housing.
Building on the experience of UIA and URBACT cities, the EU urban agenda partnerships, practitioners and experts, this web conference was the second of a series on the role of cities in working to implement this fundamental right. The online event was designed as an interactive exchange bringing experienced voices, exploring municipal-led initiatives and looking at innovative solutions to tackle the challenges of homelessness and immigration. The outcomes of this webinar built directly on the European Urban Agenda Partnerships on affordable housing work, on urban poverty and on inclusion of Migrants and Refugees and will feed the set of actions and recommendations in terms of better knowledge among cities, also aiming at pushing the agenda on the right to housing EU wide.
