The Yes We Rent! project wins the Fair Financing for Affordable Housing category under European Responsible Housing Awards
The Yes We Rent! project (Lloguem! in catalan) has been awarded the Fair Financing for Affordable Housing category under the European Responsible Housing Awards. The awards recognise the best practices and innovative ideas in the European public housing area. This award is one of Europe's housing, the International Union of Tenants and DELPHIS, give, and there were 70 nominations in five categories from 20 countries. The prize-giving ceremony took place on Thursday 16th June in Helsinki.
The jury was formed for 15 housing experts, the European Commission, the European Investment Bank, the trade union of tenants, urban planners, and European cities, presided by Barbara Steenbergen, head of the UE office of the International Union of Tenants. The experts highlighted the project's ability to become a scale-up idea, its transferability to other European cities, and its innovation.
The Yes We Rent! project was initiated in 2018 as an initiative of the Mataró City Council to look for solutions based on the cooperative and social economy and create affordable and stable alternative housing options in Mataró. In particular, the project motivates the creation of collaborative forms between rental applicants (housing cooperatives), which can provide favourable conditions to owners of empty apartments as a guarantee to put the flats into a rental.
The project was in competition with the other finalists, who were an affordable housing project for graduates of Poznán College (Poland), a not-for-profit social project in Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and a public and environmental respectful housing project from a neighbourhood d'Stavartlamon Trondheim (Norway).
The European Responsible Housing Awards started in 2014 as an initiative funded by the European Union and focused on collective social responsibility in social and affordable housing areas.
