Portici air pollution bedsheets campaign
What is it about?
Innovative air monitoring bedsheets have been designed that can be placed on residents’ balconies overlooking busy roads.
How does it work?
It’s very simple. First of all, about three hundred white bedsheets are distributed to the public, together with a colorimeter, at the main AIR- HERITAGE InfoPoint and through local associations. Subsequently, residents hang the bedsheets on their balcony or window for 60 days to measure air pollution levels. These work by changing color from white to grey - the darker the grey the higher the amount of smog in the air. Citizens can photograph the bedsheet, and then share the photos on social media using the hashtags #Stendilosmog #Airheritage, whilst they are also encouraged to send an email to the InfoPoint in order to communicate the results of their air quality monitoring.
The campaign, which is still ongoing, has been an enormous success so far, with a great number of volunteers being very interested and satisfied by the whole experience, and as a result willing to change their habits in particular by reducing the use of their car.
Finally, it should be emphasized that the COVID – 19 pandemic has failed to stop our journey towards a new awareness of the fundamental role that every single person can play in protecting the environment.
